Buehler’s Fresh Foods hosting Community Compost Forum to Network a Community Collection Route
Buehler’s Fresh Foods is hosting a Community Compost Forum on Friday, June 20, 2014 at the Wayne County Public Library from 9:45 a.m. until noon. This is a free event and open to area Wayne County businesses as a unique opportunity to learn the benefits of a food scrap network collection route by collaborating with local and state agencies.
Buehler’s has gathered the Ohio Grocers Foundation (OGA), Viridiun, Paradise Composting, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA), and Resource100 to work towards a goal of bringing awareness to food scrap generators and to build a collection program.
These agencies have been working over the past few years to encourage businesses to divert food scraps from landfills by utilizing composting facilities. The obvious benefit from recycling food scraps is environmental, but there is also an expectation that businesses can save money by reducing their disposal costs. The objective is to implement a managed supply chain concept by which food scraps generators (such as grocers, restaurants, schools, and hospitals) can form a network for route density cost-effective food scrap diversion from landfills.
“We currently partner with Republic Waste to transport our food and floral scraps to Paradise Composting for disposal and processing, and in-turn, produce our own Buehler Bagged Compost for resale,” stated Becky Foster, Buehler’s Vice President Construction and Maintenance. “If we can expand to generate community participation and obtain a route density, it will improve the economics of food scrap collection, divert organic waste from landfills, and reduce trash bills.”
