Harvest for Hunger Campaign is off and running at all Buehler’s Fresh Foods locations

Harvest for Hunger is a cooperative effort of Ohio Foodbanks and takes place every February/March. All Buehler’s Fresh Foods locations will be actively supporting this campaign which runs now through Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015.  Customers may donate $1, $5, $10, or any amount they wish at the checkout.

“We want to assure our customers that their donations will stay local,” stated Dan Shanahan, Buehler’s President and COO. “They can view the list of local member agencies in their community, such as food pantries, shelters and other hunger-relief programs, benefiting directly from their Harvest for Hunger donation.”

About Harvest for Hunger.  Harvest for Hunger is a collaboration of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Cleveland Foodbank, Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, serving 21 counties in Northeast and North Central Ohio with a goal to raise 17 million meals. All donations remain local and provide emergency food at no cost to pantries, meal sites and shelters for each respective food bank. In addition to these foodbanks, Buehler’s is also partnering with the Mid-Ohio Foodbank to cover their Coshocton and Delaware, Ohio locations.

“Buehler’s Fresh Foods has proven to be a strong partner in the fight to end hunger in our community,” said Dan Flowers, President and CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “We are extremely grateful for Buehler’s commitment to helping those facing hunger during our Harvest for Hunger campaign.”

The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is a non-profit organization with a mission to Feed People and Fight Hunger. This year, 1 in 7 people in Northeast Ohio will face hunger, and the Foodbank will be there to help.  The Foodbank is the source of emergency food for 500 food pantries, hot meal sites shelters and other hunger-relief programs that directly serve individuals and families in Carroll, Holmes, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties. The Foodbank, with its supporters and partners are leading the fight to end hunger in the communities they serve. In 2014, they distributed 26 million pounds of food, providing 22 million meals locally for people in need.

Progressive Grocer Independent
honored its 2015 Outstanding Independents at a reception held during the recent National Grocers Association (NGA) Show in Las Vegas on Monday, Feb. 9. Buehler’s Fresh Foods was honored in the “Wow” Factor category for its 14-month remodel of the Wooster, Ohio Milltown location. Pictured at the awards ceremony (left to right), Dan Shanahan, Buehler’s President and COO, and Bob Buehler, Buehler’s Executive Vice President of Marketing and Fresh Goods, and Katie Martin, Progressive Grocer Independent editor-in-chief.

“For the third consecutive year, Progressive Grocer Independent sought the best of the best in several different categories,” said Katie Martin, PGI editor-in-chief. “Buehler’s Fresh Foods truly expressed the ‘wow’ in the ‘Wow’ Factor category. The remodel not only encompassed cosmetic changes with a redesigned dairy department but also featured a retooling of product offerings with the revamped foodservice department as well as beer, wine and liquor categories. It was truly a floor to ceiling remodel.”

The annual awards focused this year on independent retailers who excelled in one of 11 categories: outstanding single-store operator, outstanding multi-store operator, bakery, center store, community outreach, deli/foodservice, meat/seafood, produce, sustainability, technology and “wow” factor. In addition to the awards reception, all of the winners are featured in the February issue of Progressive Grocer Independent.

Candidates for the awards are nominated by industry associations, suppliers, wholesalers/distributors as well as editorial recommendations. This year’s honorees come from a variety of operations throughout the country, but they all have one thing in common: all are independent retailers who have listened and made a connection to their community.

Customers have witnessed a transformation to the Buehler’s Wooster Milltown store over the past fourteen months. The store, originally opened in 1980, now boasts an all new look with new departments, new services
and new products. An official “Bread Breaking Ceremony” on Monday, November 3, 2014, commenced the festivities. A two week Grand Opening celebration runs November 5 – 18, 2014, with special savings and giveaways.

“The all new Milltown store has been designed with the customer top of mind,” stated Dan Shanahan, Buehler’s President and COO. “We listened to our customers through focus panels and surveys, and incorporated their feedback into the design. The evolution of new departments and new services was focused on making our customers’ lives easier.”

New Departments to Buehler’s Wooster Milltown include:

• New State Liquor Agency – a “store within a store,” flanked by Beer and Wine Department

• New Chef’s Kitchen – featuring an array of chef-prepared food, made-to-order, for take-out or dine-in

• New The Kitchen Table – a fun, relaxed, comfortable atmosphere to sit and enjoy Chef’s Kitchen foods

• New Beverage
Bar – convenient self-serve with Coca-Cola Freestyle machine, Scenic River Coffee flavors, tea

• New Front Entrance – open, inviting, framed with natural light and home to the grocery carts for easy access

• New Community Room – free rental to non-profit groups for small meetings and parties with catered food options

• New Chef’s School – training room for Buehler’s chefs to test recipes and menu items

Bob Buehler, ExecutivWooster-Restaurant-Chefs-Kitchen-Photoe Vice President of Marketing and Fresh Goods stated, “The Buehler family would like to thank Wooster and the surrounding area for its support.  With community input, we have changed our store by adding products, services and features found in the best stores across the United States. We are excited about the opportunity to serve the community at large and be active in its success while continuously improving both.”

“As a result of our Sign the Beam and Handprints in History promotions to engage the community during the remodel, our employees, customers, and KidzPark kids are a lasting part of our remodel, added Jack Kerby, Buehler’s Milltown Store Manager. “They may view their signatures on the structural I-beam or see their handprints in the lobby entrance every time they’re in the store.”

The timeline for the project was designed not to disrupt the customer’s shopping experience. To minimize customer inconvenience, contractors worked nights, and there was no construction over the 2013 holiday season. The project was spearheaded by local contractor, Bogner Construction, and Buehler’s made a conscientious effort to support the community by involving over sixty local contractors and businesses.
