Ohioans Have New Way to Play Lottery As Mega Millions® Sets Jackpot Record

Ohio among the first states to launch text-to-play Lottery Card™, which gives consumers a new, digital lottery experience

CLEVELAND — October 18, 2018 — As shoppers across the country race to get tickets for the record-setting $868 million Mega Millions® jackpot, Ohians have access to a new way to play that provides an exciting, convenient and fun lottery experience. The new text-to-play Lottery Card™, now available in Buehler’s Fresh Foods, allows Ohio consumers to enter draw games on their phones, get notified and paid electronically if they win. Ohio is among the first states to debut this digital lottery option. The Lottery Card is the result of a collaboration between Linq3 and Blackhawk Network (Blackhawk).

“The Lottery Card allows shoppers to skip the long lines to buy a ticket during high lottery jackpots. The Lottery Card provides a host of consumer benefits:

  • No more lost tickets – digital tickets are sent to the player’s phone via text and picture message
  • No need to check numbers – players are notified via text and picture message if they win
  • No uncollected prizes or need to return to the store to collect low-tier wins (under $600) – every time players win, they get paid electronically via PayPal
  • Buy at ANY checkout – Lottery Cards can be purchased at any checkout in
    a participating retailer, not just the service desk
  • Lottery Cards are reusable – players keep their cards for jackpot wins and for easy replay the next time they return to the store.

Lottery Cards are currently available for both Powerball and Mega Millions, and cost $10 for five plays and $20 for 10 plays. Consumers are charged the cost of their chosen Lottery Card plus $0.89 for Mobile Play Benefits.

To play, consumers simply purchase the Lottery Card at their favorite Buehler’s, Giant Eagle or Kroger location. When ready to enter the next lottery drawing, the player texts in the Lottery Card’s unique code to a specified number, provides their name and confirms their location to complete a one-time card enrollment. The player then receives a picture message with the quick pick numbers, draw date and other transaction information. Winners are notified via text and picture message and most winnings are paid automatically via PayPal. After enrolling, players can use their Lottery Card to play again and again by presenting it at checkout. Buehler’s Fresh Foods encourages store guests to support their favorite nonprofits through Direct Your Labels™ program
Individuals, nonprofit organizations can collect, redeem Our Family® brand labels for money

Store guests who visit any Buehler’s location will have the opportunity to help their favorite school or nonprofit organization earn money through the Direct Your Labels™ program.

The Our Family® Direct Your Labels program gives store guests a way to give back to their favorite nonprofit organizations with each trip they make to the grocery store. For each bundle of 500 Our Family UPC barcodes collected, participating organizations can earn $25 – with no limit to the number of original labels any organization or individual can collect.

“Buehler’s has sold Our Family products for many years and our community has benefitted from the  Labels for Learning program, which has now been rebranded as Direct Your Labels,” said Peter O’Donnell, Buehler’s Chief Financial Officer.  “Collecting the labels is an easy way to quickly raise funds for your school or charity.  One of our goals is to raise awareness of this program and increase our support in the towns we live and operate in.”

By buying Our Family brand products – and saving the UPC barcodes from those cans, boxes and bottles – store guests can help schools, faith-based and other community organizations earn money for textbooks, art supplies and more.

Eligible groups must have a valid 501(c)(3) determination to participate in Direct Your Labels. Preschool and K-12 schools are eligible to collect Our Family labels, as well as school-sponsored groups and clubs.
